“The Pigeon is particularly beloved in Ottoman culture and represents peace and goodwill.”
The Homing Pigeon seeks out undiscovered design talent to bring to your home beautiful interior products and lifestyle accessories. Focusing on designers in Turkey and the Middle East, the Pigeon may roam anywhere to find beautiful objects, rooted in their cultural aesthetic, but with a contemporary interpretation.
Founded in 2016 by Janet Chisholm, whose career in financial services allowed her to travel the world, the Homing Pigeon draws on her exposure to different cultures, as well as her passion for interior design and colour. She has made Turkey her base for the last 20 years, where she has indulged, particularly, her love of textiles and craft, spending many hours in the bazaars of Istanbul with artisan makers and craftsmen, still practicing traditional arts.
The Pigeon has been used as a method of communication from ancient times in Persia, where the art of training the birds originated. The Mughals, Romans and Greeks used them as their messengers. A regular pigeon postal service carried messages for merchants between Iskenderun and Aleppo in the Levant in the 17th century.
The Pigeon is particularly beloved in Ottoman culture and represents peace and goodwill. Now the Pigeon is seeking and bringing home beautifully crafted objects for contemporary living, while supporting local designers and artisans and their cultural heritage.
